To the Heart of Hurling
The 2018 All-Ireland Hurling Championship has been the greatest of all time and it has culminated in the Limerick hurlers bridging a gap of 45 years in beating Galway to bring back the coveted Liam McCarthy trophy Shannonside.
Brendan Ó Sé set out on a journey to explore the relationships hurling fans have with those they go to the matches with, and how going to these matches, be it with their families or friends, is what makes the game of hurling so special, so unique and so Irish.
Brendan’s photographs document the story of the 2018 All-Ireland Hurling Championship and the stories of these fans who went to the games. He attended 16 matches throughout the summer; in stadiums such as O’ Connor Park Tullamore, Nolan Park, Semple Stadium, the Gaelic Grounds, Pairc uí Chaoimh and Croke Park. He met hundreds of supporters of all teams and heard stories that would bring a smile to your face or a tear to your eye, but all tell of the same thing: hurling is in our hearts; it is how we express our identity as Irish people.
Brendan Ó Sé is a multi-award winning photographer from Cork. He is passionate about hurling.
