50s Chic 60s Cheek explores the many and dramatic changes in the fashionable image of women which took place during the 1950s and 1960s. This is illustrated through the work of notable fashion photographers of the period and the clothes of prominent and innovative fashion designers. The sophisticated, elegant and mature image of the 1950s woman is contrasted with the youthful, casual, at times innocent, look which dominated fashion in the mid 1960s. The 1950s look was a continuation of the 'New Look' launched by Dior in 1947. It was in this period also that models began to emerge as personalities. |
In the mid sixties fashion and fashion photography reflected the radical social changes that were taking place. Thanks to their innovation photographers were soon to become as famous as the people they photographed. The establishment was being replaced by a new, youth-driven, pop-embracing culture. Instead of fashion filtering down to the masses, it now originated in the streets. Static, dignified beauties gave way to teenagers whose awkward posture and innocent expressions became the new ideal. Booking essential for guided tours. |
