‘The Spiritual vision of Stanley Spencer (1891–1959)’
This lecture focuses on a key aspect of the work of one of the best known and best loved of all 20th century British artists, whose highly individual brand of visionary expression links him with artists such as William Blake. His vision is inseparable from his home village of Cookham which is the location of many of his most striking and beautiful images and which he immortalised in his art.

Lunchtime lecture

‘Equipping the Tea Table: Silver, ceramics and ‘luxury commodities’, 1660-1800’
The introduction of the new drinks, or ‘luxury commodities’, of tea, coffee and chocolate had a profound effect on social behaviour, consumption and ritual in Europe, no less so in Britain and Ireland, from the mid-17th century. Their popularity spawned the development of an entire industry of plain and decorative vessels and implements in both silver and ceramics. This lecture and slide show will survey a variety of these items within the social and historical context of this period.
Speaker: Jessica Cunningham MA
Jessica Cunningham graduated from the MA in Design History and Material Culture at the National College of Art and Design in 2008. She was the 2008 joint recipient of the Desmond Guinness Scholarship from the Irish Georgian Society and her article on Dublin’s Huguenot Goldsmiths was published in the Society’s latest Irish Architectural and Decorative Studies journal. Jessica lectures at the N.C.A.D., the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers, and at Trinity College. She is currently researching 17th century Irish silver.
