Children’s imaginations still soar despite restrictions

‘The ABC of something’ is the basic or most important facts about a subject. ‘ABC of the Three Muses’ was a project that ran through October-December 2020 in which Limerick primary school children explored the concept of ‘facts’ as they apply to museum collections.

Working remotely with artist Jo Hine and supported with specially created lesson plans, videos and art materials, teachers and pupils from three Limerick primary schools explored the connection between the facts about an object and that object itself, using the collections of the Three Muses – Limerick City Gallery of Art (LCGA), Limerick Museum and The Hunt Museum – to spark curiosity and inspiration.

Through printed reproductions of artworks from LCGA, a loan box of objects from Limerick Museum and 3D models of objects from the Hunt Collection, children used charcoal and watercolour to critically and creatively respond to the treasures of Limerick’s museum collections despite the lockdown.

The uplifting work created through this project shows how children’s imaginations still manage to soar with vivid colour and wild inventiveness despite a difficult year of confinement and restrictions.

This project was part of The Three Muses programme, a joint education initiative between the Hunt Museum, Limerick City Gallery of Art and Limerick Museum, supported by The Hunt Museum and Limerick City and County Council. ‘ABC of the Three Muses’ is kindly sponsored by Affinity Credit Union. Special thanks to teachers and pupils at Corpus Christi, Scoil Ide and St Anne’s.
