Communities of Culture is a Hunt Museum programme exploring the different unique cultural experiences and heritages of each of Limerick’s regeneration areas – Southill, Ballinacurra Weston, Moyross and St. Mary’s Park.
Building on the success if Communities of Culture 2014 – 2015, The Hunt Museum invited participating groups to get involved in a new phase for 2015 – 2016. Through a series of targeted community and museum based projects, Communities of Culture aims to support the groups in expressing their unique stories and contributions to the cultural landscape of Limerick. The groups come from a variety of communities to ensure the inclusion of a wide range of perspectives and voices on culture in Limerick.
The groups have been working with artist Siobhán Clancy to build upon the achievements of last year’s projects. They have produced two unique loan boxes with artefacts chosen by the project participants related to local history, heritage, lore as well as contemporary culture on the north and south sides of Limerick City. The groups involved in this years programme are: Go4IT Youth Group in Moyross, The Midwest School for The Hearing Impaired, Moyross Threads, Southill Men’s Shed, Southill Women’s Group, St. Mary’s Over 55s Women’s GroupSt. Mary’s Parish Men’s Shed and The West End Youth Centre 7 – 10’s Group.
These boxes will contain objects that can be handled, media works and printed material such as photographs, texts, etc. Fab Lab in the city centre has been very supportive of the project, facilitating design sessions and assisting in production of items belonging to these loanboxes. These boxes will be resources for the people of Limerick City, enabling them to discover the history and culture of their area through objects. The boxes will be available for groups to take out on loan from June 2016.
The official launch of these loan boxes is to take place on Wednesday the 15th of June, with the Kids Launch commencing at 15:30 until 16:30, and the Teens and Adults Launch taking place later that evening from 18:30 to 19:00.
