Breakfast-cup with stand

Description

A breakfast-cup which is one of a pair. It is also called a trembleuse cup. The silver-gilt mounts are decorated with leaves in rococo style. Each cup has a separate matching base with a notch that attached the cup to a tray and prevented it from falling over. German, Augsburg.

File of material relating to two trembleuse cup mounts. These objects were originally thought to be a pair of salts and some documents identify them as such. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of objects (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (29 October 1997) containing remarks made by Pippa Shirley, Victoria and Albert Museum. Identifies the objects as a pair of eighteenth-century 'trembleuse' breakfast cup mounts, used fixed to a tray; letter (9 December 1997) from Shirley to Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum. In relation to the trembleuse cups, writes that they are Augsburg and marked for Elias Adam (born 1669-died 1745). Objects by Adam in collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Photocopy of image of these objects enclosed. Shirley is not sure of the date of the cups in the Hunt Museum but states that the Augsburg mark is of the type used in the 1730s. With her letter, Shirley encloses photocopies of extract from publication which includes a painting which depicts a trembleuse cup in use. Also, photocopy of elaborate chocolate garniture dating from Augsburg, 1730. Executed by various goldsmiths including Elias Adam who made the chocolate pot; photocopy of extract from a Sothebys, Zurich, catalogue of sale (c. 13-14 November 1979) with image and description of a German trembleuse cup.
