A small, square, bronze seal with incised characters. The back is raised to form a handle with a hole pierced through it.

Provenance

File of material relating to a small seal. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); letter (27 August 1998) from Bo B. Jensen (address withheld) to the Hunt Museum. On visit to the Museum saw the present object and believes it to be mislabelled. Currently, origin said to be Egypt but writer believes it is Chinese and explains what he thinks the symbols thereon mean; acknowledgement letter (9 September 1998) from Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, to Jensen; letter (10 September 1998) from Holland to Donald B. Wagner, Department of Asian Studies, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, requesting comments on the seal; reply (16 September 1998) says it is certain that this is a Chinese seal and that it is quite likely it should be dated Han. Also, more likely that it is bronze rather than marble as currently described. He translates the inscription as 'Seal of Wang XX' but says he is not an expert in this area; acknowledgement (9 October 1998) from Holland to Wagner; unsigned note (date unspecified) to Fiona Davern, Registrar, Hunt Museum, which states that a Chinese visitor has identified the seal as being of Chinese origin. Accompanied by sketch of seal interpreting symbolism.
