Rosary (single decade)

Description

A single decade rosary in ivory. It consists of a large metal ring set in a large carved deaths-head and ten beads increasing in size towards the small ivory crucifix. The crucifix ends in a tassel.

File of material relating to a single decade rosary. Includes photocopy of object description sheet (date unspecified). It is questioned if the object might be French or Flemish and dates from either the sixteenth or seventeenth century; document comprising photocopy of photograph and sketch of object (date unspecified); transcription of label which described object in foundation building display (c. 1996). This document states that object dates from seventeenth-century Flanders; photocopy of extract from a Christies catalogue of sale (c. 7 May 1956) which contains description of rosary similar to present object; notes taken from paper by Edward A. McGuire entitled 'Old Ireland Rosaries and Rosary Crosses,' published in 'The Connoisseur'; notes taken from a paper by Father Henry Peel, O.P., entitled 'A Note on Rosary Beads' published in 'The Rosary in History'; notes 2 February 1996 which reads, 'burnet rose hips (Rosa pimpinelli folia) can produce dark beads, "hardened and durable"; by some roasting process which would not shrivel or cook the hips.'
