Lead plaque

Description

A lead plaque with an inscriptions both in runes and, more extensively, in Old English, paraphrasing the introduction to an Anglo-Saxon text, the First Book of Catholic Homilies by Aelfric. It was apparently intended to serve as a cover of some kind. There is a border of two inscribed parallel lines around the inscriptions. The right hand edge of the plaque is pierced with three holes with the bottom hole having a lead loop. This may be a scholarly fake of the eighteenth or nineteenth century in Anglo-Saxon style.
