Description

A stand or base of a vessel in ivory. It is ring-shaped and bearing relief scenes. The carved scenes show the Labours of Hercules. French or German.

Archival information

File of material relating to a pot stand or base of vessel. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified). It states that object shows the labours of Hercules. Information card has been amended, possibly as a result of comments made by John Cherry, British Museum. Also present is Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) which notes Cherrys comments. Dates the object to late sixteenth century-early seventeenth century. It had originally been dated to seventh-eighth centuries. Cherry states that it is not English but is French or German. Questioned if it is the base for a cup and if it might have been mounted to another material, for example, silver. Also that [object] is a 'very Mannerist figure.'
