Enamelled Bronze Limoges plaque from a Gospel lectionary

Description

A Limoges panel in enamelled bronze. This panel would have been inset into a highly decorated book cover. It may have been surrounded with precious jewels, such book covers were called ‘treasure bindings’. Similar panels adorned Gospel lectionary manuscripts or books. The panel shows decorated with a figure of Christ with his hand raised in the form of a blessing. Beside him is Alpha (A) and Omega (Ω), the first and last to indicate Christ as being for Christians “the beginning and the end”. The figures are deeply engraved and ornamented, with the details in white enamel.
