Mount

Description

A bronze gilt, rectangular, mount inset with a garnet in centre. The garnet is surrounded by an interlaced animal motif. The piece is framed with stylized floral ornament. This may have been a belt mount. Possibly Anglo-Saxon.

File of material relating to a belt clasp set with garnet. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified). Notes that Raghnall O' Floinn stated that object is Frankish and dates it to the sixth-seventh centuries; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing comments made about object by John Cherry, British Museum. He attributes object to the seventh century and Anglo-Saxon, probably English. Also, that this object is from the same sale as an Anglo-Saxon seventh-century buckle in the Hunt Museum with registration number beginning 'DG.' Full registration number is not given.
