Gyldensteen Cross

Description

This 12th century reliquary cross is made in two pieces, which, when put together, form a box in the shape of a crucifix, perhaps to contain a relic of the true cross. It is made of walrus ivory. The front depicts the figure of Christ on the cross under the hand of God. The foot of Christ foot overhangs the frame and the finely carved loin-cloth falls below the knee. The eyes are inlaid with either jet or paste. The reverse shows the Agnus Dei within a quatrefoil surrounded by the symbols of the Four Evangelists.
