Description

A bronze figure in the form of a seated man on top of the capital of classical form. The figure is bearded, naked except for a strip of fabric draped across his knees. He is sitting with one knee raised towards his chest. English or German.

File of material relating to a seated man on capital. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified). Information card states that object dates from the twelfth century and that it was exhibited in a Boston museum; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing comments made about object by John Cherry, British Museum. He dates it to the fourteenth century and under description, the following is recorded: 'St. Simon or St. Simeon Stylites - sitting on a pillar in Egypt'; black and white photograph of statue and photocopy thereof (date unspecified); card with handwritten notes, and photocopy thereof (date unspecified), containing description of object. Attributes figure to England or Germany.
