File of material relating to bronze Limoges chasse. Includes two photocopies of Hunt Museum object comment sheet (dates unspecified) containing comments made about object. It is not clear who makes comments recorded but it was probably John Bradley. The object comment sheet quotes from publication by James Bentley, 'A Calendar of Saints: The Lives of the Principal Saints of the Christian Year' (Little, Brown and Company, 2000), in relation to Saint Martial of Limoges; photocopy of extract from publication by Patrick Doran, '50 Treasures from the Hunt Collection' (Limerick: Hunt Museum Executive, 1993). Comprises image of the chasse and description; photocopy of extract from paper entitled 'The Hunt Museum' by Patrick F. Doran in the 'North Munster Antiquarian Journal (Studia in Memoriam John Hunt),' (Volume XX, 1978), which describes object; handwritten notes (date unspecified) describe the chasse and note that it was found during excavations for the foundation of a house in Godalming, Surrey, and was formerly in the collection of Lord Midleton; note (c. 11 December 1995) by Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, details information given to him by Patrick Doran about the finding of the object. States that it was found in a box under a road in Surrey. The road was dug up due to flooding. Later annotation on this document by Holland (15 January 1996) acknowledges that other sources put forward the theory that the chasse was found during excavations for a house, as already detailed; transcription of label which described the chasse in the foundation building display (c. 1996); postcard with image of another casket, the Thomas à Becket Casket, held by the Victoria and Albert Museum (date unspecified); colour photograph of items (date unspecified), including caskets, in a museum display case (museum unidentified). Photograph is accompanied by itinerary for trip to Italy which includes visits to museums. Possible that photograph was taken during this trip (c. October 1995). Published references to caskets similar to present object. Includes photocopy of extract from catalogue of sale (c. 29 January 1999) comprising image and description of a Limoges reliquary casket offered for sale; photocopy of extract from publication in German (c. March 1939) issued by Hans W. Lang, Berlin, entitled 'Die Sammlung List Magdeburg Europäisches Kunstgewerbe des 13. bis 18. Jahrhunderts' by Otto von Falke. Includes images and descriptions of caskets; photocopies of clippings from unidentified newspapers (dates unspecified) relating to the Thomas à Becket Casket and the Hereford Casket; photocopy of clipping from 'The Times' newspaper (23 September 1996) in relation to the sale of the Keir collection, which includes some Limoges caskets. Images of caskets also present; letter (13 February 2002) from John Cherry, Keeper, Medieval and Modern Europe, British Museum, to a docent (name withheld), Hunt Museum, directing her to published sources of information about caskets. Writes that he thinks the chasse in the Hunt Museum would be dated to the early thirteenth century; request (c. July 1996) from Dennis J. Turner (address withheld) to Michael Holland, requesting information about the chasse; copy of reply from Holland (17 July 1996) enclosing reference from publication by Doran; letter (7 August 1996) from Turner to Holland in which he indicates he is attempting to trace the building constructed in Godalming circa 1840 at which time, it has been suggested, the chasse was found; letter (1 February 1996) from Mary Mackey, senior archivist, Surrey Record Office, to a docent (name and address withheld), Hunt Museum. Thanks him for letter relating to the Midleton mace. Writes that she has not found any reference to it in either the Brodrick family correspondence or the Midleton estate papers. States that there are Brodrick/Midleton papers at the National Library of Ireland and estate papers in the National Archives, Ireland; photocopy of extract from 'Abegg-siftung Bern in Riggisberg: I Minor Arts-Sculpture-Painting' by Michael Bettler in collaboration with Karl Otavsky (Berne: Paul Haupt, 1973). Contains image and description of a Limoges chasse in French and English with scene of murder of Saint Thomas à Becket.
