Limoges Reliquary chasse

Description

This reliquary châsse or box is typical in style for reliquary (container for precious objects). The bronze house-shaped box is decorated with religious scenes and coloured in glass enamel. Limoges in France was the centre of enamel making and was on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela so many of these reliquaries were moved across Europe. This example shows angels and saints of the medieval Christian church. This story illustrated here could be Saint Martial or Thomas Becket.
