Description

This steel die is octagonal in shape and made by William Mossop (1751-1805), Dublin. The die shows the draped bust of William Deane with the inscription GULIELMUS DEANE ARM and MOSSOP. One of the octagonal sides is inscribed with the number 3 and R WOOD. A die for the medal HCL 012.

File of material relating to a bronze medal (HCL 012) and the die (HCL 013) from which it was struck. Includes photocopies of object description sheets, one for each object, which include sketches of objects (dates unspecified). Object description sheets note that inscription 'Guliemus Deane Arm' is on medal as is name of medallist, Mossop. Name R. Wood is inscribed on the die; photocopies of photographs of objects also present (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from '50 Treasures from the Hunt Collection' (Limerick: Hunt Museum Executive, 1993) by Patrick Doran which includes image and description of present objects; photocopy of extract from 'A Dictionary of Ireland Artists,' volume II, (Ireland University Press, 1969), by Theo J. Snoddy, which contains biographies of William Mossop (1751-1805) and William Stephen Mossop (1788-1827), both medallists. Doran notes this medal was made by William Mossop; photocopy of extract from exhibition catalogue for 'Ireland Portraits 1660-1860' held at three institutions, the National Gallery of Ireland, the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Ulster Museum (c. 1969-70). Includes references to the Mossops; photocopy of extract from 'Ireland Glass - an account of glass-making in Ireland from the XVIth century to the present day' by M.S. Dudley Westropp (London: Herbert Jenkins Limited, c. 1920) which relates to William Deane, commemorated on the medal; copy of letter (1 September 1998) from Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, to Pauline Mossop (address withheld). Her family is descended from Mossop, the medallist. Encloses images of present objects; photocopy of extract from paper entitled 'The Hunt Museum' by Patrick F. Doran in the 'North Munster Antiquarian Journal (Studia in Memoriam John Hunt),' (Volume XX, 1978), which describes object.
