Description

A Chinese earthenware glazed grotto group depicting figures and houses above a fish-filled river and craggy, tree-covered hills. This was probably used for growing orchids.

File of material relating to a grotto group / orchid grower. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); photocopies of extracts from Sothebys catalogue of sale (c. 3 November 1981). Present object was purchased at this auction. Annotation suggests it may have been purchased for £300-400. Annotations further suggest that other objects were bought or sold by the Hunts at this auction. Suggested that a pair of Chinese black painted vases may have been purchased ; photocopy of extract from publication entitled 'An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Traditional Symbols' by J.C. Cooper (London: Thames & Hudson, 1987). Includes image and description of an object which reads, 'An 18th-century Chinese carved this turquoise matrix into an icon of the cosmic mountain, where human, animal and vegetable life exist in perfection and mutual harmony, all joined and nourished by a never-failing waterfall and stream.'
