Limoges Bronze Plaque or Backplate of Book cover

Description

This Limoges plaque in bronze would have formed the back of a Gospel (prayer) book. It depicts the crucifixion with figures on either side of the cross, probably Mary and St John, and angels above. The letters IHS (symbol and monogram for Jesus) and XPS (made up of chi (x) and rho (p) in the Christian Church. This plaque would have been decorated with enamel in different colours, especially blue and gold. The enamel has disappeared, likely due to fire.
