Silver-gilt mounted Chinese bowl

Description

A Ming dynasty, Wan Li (1573-1619) (Emperior Xian), porcelain bowl with Elizabethan silver mounts. The outside rim of the bowl is decorated with a flying horse border and the walls are decorated with flower sprays.

File of material relating to a large, mounted Wan Li bowl. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (28 November 1997) containing comments made about object by Henry Sandon, ceramics expert, BBC Antiques Roadshow. Says that the bowl is typical Ming; printout from database (1 November 2000) which describes bowl; photocopy of extract from publication by Maura Rinaldi entitled 'Kraak Porcelain: A Moment in the History of Trade' (London: Bamboo Publishing Ltd, 1989). Contains description and image of Jingdezhen bowl dated to circa 1585-1600 with annotation which reads: 'Yours has contemporary? Silver gilts mounts I think'; photocopy of extract from 'The Connoisseur' (c. June 1955) which comprises article by Yvonne Hackenbroch entitled 'Chinese Porcelain in European Silver Mounts.' Includes image of present object; letter, and photocopy thereof (24 February 1984), from Philippa Glanville, Assistant Keeper, Department of Metalwork, Victoria and Albert Museum, to Gertrude Hunt, Drumleck, Baily, county Dublin. Requests to know if Hunt still possesses present object. The Victoria and Albert Museum has recently acquired 'from a Dorset family the Trenchard bowl, Chinese porcelain with mermaid mounts of 1597.' Glanville is writing an article about such objects and requests photograph of the Hunt bowl; black and white photograph of bowl (date unspecified).
