Carved Walrus Ivory Plaque
Description
This walrus ivory plaque or carved panel shows images of the crucifixion (Jesus on the cross). The panel is in the shape of a small rectangle with borders that are pierced with eight holes, indicating that the panel was likely attached to a larger object. Similar examples are thought to have been part of a larger cross. The panel shows the figure of Christ resting upon a suppedaneum beneath the hand of God. The cross has raised borders with the symbols of the four Evangelists shown at the corners of the plaque. English, Anglo-Saxon.
