Irish Delftware Plate

Description

An Irish delftware circular plate decorated in the centre with an escutcheon containing the cross of St Cuthbert and a date 1538. There is floral decoration around the rim. The plate has been repaired. This plate may have been made in the Chambers factory. Probably Dublin.

File of material relating to a Ireland delftware plate. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified); document which comprises photocopy of photograph of object and notes which state, 'Other described as a Huguenot plate or bearing the cross of St Louis. 1538 is an anniversary date' (date unspecified); incomplete photocopy of letter (29 January 1996) from Peter Francis, Institute of Ireland Studies, Queens University, Belfast, to Mairead Dunlevy, National Museum of Ireland, and Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, commenting on several objects in the Hunt Museum and enclosing photocopy of extract from notes (18 January 1996) made while visiting the Museum. In relation to present object, concludes that it was probably made in Dublin; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (18 January 1996) which contains comments made by Francis about object. States that object is probably a commemorative plate made during the eighteenth century; document which comprises photocopy of note (10 March 2001) from Francis to John Hunt, Junior, which states he was sent some information about object by Cormac Burke, Ulster Museum. It appears that the cross of Saint Cuthbert had some special significance for the Delamain family. Henry Delamain was a maker of delftware in Dublin. Suggests that they file away information until it is discovered what it means. Document states that Caroline Delamain owned a diamond cross.
