Ivory hip-roofed casket

Description

A Siculo-Arabic casket in elephant ivory with gilt copper mounts and with a slightly later lockplate. The casket is made up of large plates of ivory with gilt copper fittings terminating in swelling beak-like forms. The top is hinged to the body and the casket rest on four round feet which may be modern. The lockplate dates from the first half of the 13th century (probably fitted in Germany), the feet are modern.
