Salt-cellar

Description

A salt-cellar in brass. It is in three parts diminishing in size to the top. The two bottom sections are bell-shaped and the top domed, ending in a pine cone. It is decorated in strap work and scroll decoration. The salt cellar rest on three ball feet. The interior is silver-gilt.

Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (29 October 1997) containing remarks made about object by Pippa Shirley, Victoria and Albert Museum. She questions if the lid might be a replacement; photocopy of extract from the 'Antiques Trade Gazette' (8 May 1996) which comprises image and description of a similar salt cellar recently sold; photocopy of extract from 'Illustrated Handbook' (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1964) which contains image and brief description of similar object; photocopy of extract from a Christies catalogue of sale (c. 29 April 1902) which contain images and descriptions of similar objects. This is accompanied by notes (22 January 1996) by Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, which transcribe information from the catalogue of sale.
