A Castor ware hunt cup with a narrow tapering base. The body is decorated with moulded figures of a dog chasing a hare. English, Nene Valley, Northamptonshire.

Archival information

File of material relating to a dog and hare moulded drinking cup. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified). Two annotations recorded on the information card. The first (1 December 1996) states that it is from the collection of the late H.A. Beeston and cost £1,050; the second annotation (date unspecified) reads, 'from Nean Valley, Northamptonshire. Barbotine decoration - decoration added after pot shaped through liquid clay shaped on surface', Hunt Museum object comment sheet (date unspecified) containing comments made about object by an unnamed lecturer in Greek and Roman material, Trinity College Dublin. Object is dated to second-third centuries A.D. and it is described as a castor ware 'hunt-cup', a second Hunt Museum object comment sheet (10 July 1996) contains comments made about object by Lindsay Allason-Jones, Museum of Antiquities, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She dates it to the second century A.D. and states it was made in Lesoux, France. Also comments that object has been repaired and describes it as a wine cup; two photocopies from 'Sotheby's Annual Review' (c. 1961-62) which comprises image and description of the [present object]. States this this type of ware, castor ware, is known to have been produced in the area around Castor, near Peterborough, and also at Colchester.
