Beaked flagon (oinochoe)

Description

A bronze Etruscan oinochoe or jug with an upward flanged spout, slightly tapered body and flattened foot. The rim has snake-headed terminals and the handle has foliate decoration at the base.

File of material relating to a bronze oinochoe. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object and photocopy of photograph of object on verso (date unspecified); black and white photograph of object (date unspecified); report by conservator (c. 2 May 1997) which discusses condition of object pre-treatment as well as treatments carried out; letter (27 February 1986) from W. Robert Moore, Keeper of Archaeology, Northampton Museums, to John Hunt, Senior, and Gertrude Hunt, Baily, county Dublin. Writes that reference to present object was published a few years ago. Requests to know if the Hunts still own the object and if so, if they would consider allowing the flagon to be acquired by his museum and displayed in Northampton; photocopy of extract of paper by Peter Harbison and Lloyd R. Laing entitled, 'Some Iron Age Mediterranean Imports in England' ('British Archaeological Reports 5,' 1974). States that this object, 'may have come either from the Ball collection in St Albans, or from a Northamptonshire collection sold at Sothebys probably before the last war'; photocopies of images of object and similar object, taken from unidentified publication (dates unspecified); label (date unspecified) which was attached to the object. It states, 'Oenochoe found at Northampton 1864 from J.P.' Label is in poor physical condition and is crumbling; photocopy of extract from Sothebys catalogue of sale (c. July 1980) which contains image and description of similar object.
