Porcelain pug dogs (one of a pair)

Description

A Chinese pug dog in porcelain. He is sitting with his tail wrapped around his body and is wearing a bell [?] on a red collar around the neck. One of a pair with MG 113 B. Qing dynasty, reign of Qianlong (1736-95).

File of material relating to a pair of porcelain pugs. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); extract from 'Country Life' (9 December 1999) which includes image of a pair of porcelain dogs which came up for sale recently. Also notes that the German for 'pug' is 'mops' and after the 1734 excommunication of Freemasons, a pseudo-masonic secret society was set up by German Roman Catholics, who took a stuffed pug as their symbol and where known as the Mopsen; two photocopies of extract from exhibition catalogue in German entitled 'Mopsiade' at Schlossmuseum, Darmstadt (c. 1973). Contains description of present objects which were exhibited. Lenders to the exhibition named as Mr and Mrs John Hurst [sic], Dublin; photocopy of Hunt Museum object comment sheet (17 April 1996) containing comments made about objects by Peter Francis. He attributes them to mid-eighteenth-century China and questions if they are Qianlong; photocopy of extract from catalogue of sale in French of Sothebys in Monaco (12 February 1979) which contains image and description of similar object; photocopy of extract from Sothebys catalogue of sale (c. 6 July 1971) which comprises images and descriptions of similar objects; photocopy of extract from Sothebys catalogue of sale (c. 25 May 1971) which comprises image of a pair of similar objects. It is unclear if any of those depicted and/or described in these catalogues of sale are the present objects.
