File of material relating to a drinking glass. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified); two photocopies of photographs of glass (dates unspecified). Object is attributed to Ireland and noted that the following is engraved on object: 'Lord Arch Bishop of Dvblin 1715'; photocopy of photograph of object; photocopy of incomplete letter (29 January 1996) from Peter Francis, Institute of Ireland Studies, Queens University of Belfast, to Mairead Dunlevy, National Museum of Ireland, and Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, commenting on several objects in the Hunt Museum. In relation to the present object, writes, 'I had a long, hard look at the 'Archbishop King' glass, and I agree with your feelings that the glass is wholeheartedly wrong.' Suggests that it is a later fabrication. Francis encloses photocopies of notes he made while examining objects in the Museum. Compares present object to a glass in the Ulster Museum and concludes that engraving on both is by the same hand. Goes through the features of the glass in detail and states, 'Overall, there is not even one feature in the glass that clearly suggests genuine age'; photocopy of extract from paper entitled 'The Hunt Museum' by Patrick F. Doran in the 'North Munster Antiquarian Journal (Studia in Memoriam John Hunt),' (Volume XX, 1978), which describes object; photocopy of paper (date unspecified) by Peter Francis entitled 'Franz Tieze (1842-1932) and the re-invention of history on glass'; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (date unspecified) containing comments made by Mary Boydell about object. Comments that it could be either Ireland or an English import and that this is a soda glass rather than lead glass. Also, that the inscription has a parallel in Ireland. Refers to a wine glass in the Ulster Museum, engraved by the same hand; letter (11 September 1996) from Boydell to Holland, enclosing something for his files (not attached to letter); photocopy of paper by Catriona MacLeod entitled 'The Earliest Ireland Drinking Glass, Dublin, 1715, published in the 'Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland' (Volume 103, 1973). Refers to the present object; photocopy of image of similar glass, probably taken from a catalogue of Sothebys in Ireland and offered for sale at Slane Castle, county Meath, on 25-26 June 1979. Annotation states, 'Ex Benjamin J. Bell'; photocopy of paper by Oliver Ffooks entitled 'On Air Twist Soda Glasses: Were They of English or Continental Origin?' and published in 'The Antique Collector' (c. June 1970).
