Bronze crucifix

Description

A bronze crucifix with the cross having expanding arms with slightly rounded ends. Christ is depicted standing facing out, head erect, wearing a robe. Possibly a pectoral cross. English or Byzantine.

Provenance

File of material relating to a crucifix. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified). Questions if the object dates from the tenth century; document compiled by Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum (22 May 1995) conveying information given by Susan Youngs, British Museum, about a number of objects in the Hunt Museum. In relation to the present object, states that it is a similar shape to Byzantine pectoral crosses and questions if it might date from the fifth-eighth centuries A.D.; black and white photograph of object, and photocopy thereof (date unspecified); card, and photocopy thereof (date unspecified), with handwritten notes. Describes object, questions if it dates from the tenth century and states that it was excavated in England.
