Wooden panel carved with a picture of a monk

Description

This wooden panel comes from Ireland, it is considered a rare survival because it is made of wood and was likely once part of a wooden structure. The monk or cleric, perhaps a Saint, is carved in high relief, wearing robes and a cloak. He appears to be holding a staff or crozier, croziers were often used by abbots and became highly symbolic items in their own right.
