Figure of an animal (panther / leopard)

Description

A bronze figure of an animal, possibly a panther or a leopard, on a porphyry base. The bottom part of the front legs and the tail are missing. The head is damaged but the eyes, nostrils and mouth are visible. Possibly Roman.

File of material relating to a figure of a panther or leopard. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified). States that object is Roman. Hunt Museum object comment sheet (10 July 1996) containing comments made about object by Lindsay Allason-Jones, Museum of Antiquities, The University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She comments that object is not Roman and questions if it might be Persian. Describes material as leaded bronze with lead insert and questions if it is a furniture mount.
