Description

An ivory corpus attached to a log. The arms are missing, the eyes are closed and the head leans to the left. The loin-cloth is short and knotted in the centre. The feet are nailed together.

Archival information

File of material relating to a corpus on log cross. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of the object (date unspecified); letter (7 June 1997) from Mairead Dunlevy, National Museum of Ireland, to Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, enclosing a photocopy of one of the National Museum of Irelands object index cards (date unspecified). Relates to a crucifix mounted on an oak cross lent to the National Museum of Ireland by Gertrude Hunt, which had been preserved in Limerick for 300 years. Index card attributes the cross to sixteenth-century Spain. Annotation on index card states that it was returned to M. Moloney in June 1950. It is not clear if the letter and index card refer to the present object.
