Pharmacy jar

Description

An albarello or drug-jar in maiolica. It is a tall waisted jar decorated on the front with a swag, flowers and foliage in green and yellow. In the centre there is scrolled decoration with a lion rampant within an oval. The back is decorated with a blue floral motif (alla porcelana). This is one of pair. Sicilian, possibly Trapani.

Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of objects (date unspecified); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (date unspecified) containing remarks by Timothy Wilson who described them as Albarello jars and dated them to the seventeenth-century Sicily, possibly Trapani or Sciacca; printouts from database (dates unspecified) which describe the jars; photocopy of images (date unspecified) of similar drug jars; photocopies of three letters from various museums in Italy in relation to Albarelli jars. In one letter (18 February 1999) in Italian, Doctor V.A. Abbate, Director, Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, confirms that the second albarelli in the Hunt Museum is from sixteenth-seventeenth century Trapani; photocopies present which show images of similar drug jars in museums in Italy (dates unspecified); bibliography (date unspecified) listing relevant published works which can be used for research purposes.
