Wooden chest with hinged lid

Description

A rectangular wooden chest with a convex top and possibly traces of deer skin covering. There are many studs decorating the outside. There is a handle at each end, a lock on one side and lid hinges on the other. The letters E.A.P. spelt out in studs are on top of the lid.

File of material relating to a wooden chest. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified). Reference to the main chamber, Craggaunowen Castle, county Clare, where object was probably displayed for a period of time. Photocopy of photograph of object on verso of object description sheet; photocopy of notes (3 October 1995) containing comments made by Robert McLoughlin, 'Clan MacColin' re-enactment group, California, USA, in relation to various objects in the Hunt Museum. In relation to present object states that it is possibly American and possibly dates from the early nineteenth century. Referred to as a fur traders box. Annotation states that such objects were also used in Europe as travelling chests'; letter (3 October 2001) from an individual (name and address withheld), to Fiona Davern, Registrar, Hunt Museum. Has trunk almost identical to present object and sends some information about it now. Encloses colour photographs of trunk in his possession and transcription of makers label. It was made by Charles Tennant, corner of Winetavern Street and Merchants Quay, Dublin.
