Axehead

Description

A bronze socketed axehead with one loop. There is a ridge just above the loop with the rim badly damaged. The cutting edge is splayed and also damaged. This axehead was found as part of a hoard in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.

File of material relating to a socketed, bronze axehead (HCA 285) and a fragment of a socketed, bronze axehead (HCA 286). Includes object description sheets (dates unspecified) which note that both came from the Mullingar hoard; photocopies of extracts from relevant publications. They are: 'The Journal of the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland' (Dublin, 1879) which mentions bronze objects held by a dealer in Mullingar and found by a labouring man in Roscommon; 'The Hoards of the Ireland Later Bronze Age' (University College, Dublin, 1983) by George Eogan which comprises catalogue of objects; paper entitled 'The Hunt Museum' by Patrick F. Doran from the 'North Munster Antiquarian Journal,' (volume 20, 1978) which mentions the Mullingar hoard; photocopy of extract from 'Deed List' (c. 1974) which describes the Mullingar hoard and under 'locality of find' states, 'Day Sale 337, L.M. Hewson, P.R.H. & A.S.I.' Also present is list of objects in the Hunt Museum (13 October 1995) which are or which possibly are from the Mullingar hoard. Their registration numbers are HCA 381, HCA 382, HCA 384 and HCA 391. Brief description of these objects, photocopies of photographs and photocopies of object description sheets present.
