Staff-mount of Virgin and Child

Description

A figure of Virgin and child in pipe-clay. The Virgin is dressed in long robes and wearing a long veil and crown, the child rests on her left hip. The Mother and Child hold hands and the Infant holds her left wrist. This piece is made from a mould and may have been used as a staff mount. Probably Netherlands.

File of material relating to a statue of Virgin and Child. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); note (date unspecified) by Raghnall Ó Floinn, National Museum of Ireland, which attributes this object to the Netherlands and dates it to the fifteenth-sixteenth centuries; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (25 April 1996) containing comments made about object by John Cherry, British Museum. States that object is probably Dutch and fifteenth-century. Questions if it is a staff mount or pilgrims badge. Information card also contains annotations noting information given by Ó Floinn and Cherry.
