Boss or print from a mazer bowl
Description
A bronze boss that is thought to have come from the bottom of a mazer, a shallow wooden drinking vessel popular in the 14th-16th centuries. Mazers commonly had silver or silver-gilt embellishment around the foot and lip and a decorated disc (called a print or boss) in the centre of the inside. This disc is decorated with the arms of Westminster Abbey: a shield with a cross surrounded by birds. Around the edge of the shield, there is foliate (leaves) decoration.
