Description

A painting of the Virgin Mary at the Crucifixion, in oil on wood. The head of Mary is covered and a figure dressed in red stands behind her, probably St John; the arm of Christ arm hangs down by her face. This painting was probably part of a larger one which was cut down.

Includes photocopy of information card which erroneously names Mary Magdalen as the subject of the painting with photocopy of image of painting (date unspecified); annotation notes comments made by Father Gregory Collins: '"Mary Magdalen - first person to see the Resurrection - not the repentant harlot'; Hunt Museum collection survey form (4 December 1996); Hunt Museum object comment sheet (19 March 1997) containing remarks by Doctor Eileen Kane, Department of History of Art, University College Dublin. Dates the painting to the fifteenth century; letter (8 January 2003) from Fiona Davern, Registrar, Hunt Museum, to Hilde Lobelle-Caluwe, Curator, Memling Museum, Bruges, Belgium. Describes the painting and writes that it is obviously part of a larger work and is similar to the Virgin in the lost work, 'Descent from the Cross,' by Rogier van der Weyden, of which there is a replica in the Memling Museum. Requests information from Lobelle-Caluwe. Response (11 April 2003) from Lobelle-Caluwe present. Hypothesises that the painting in the Hunt Museum might be a copy of a lost prototype with three figures, Joseph of Arimathea, Saint John the Evangelist and the Virgin. States that the Hunt Museum painting might date from the sixteenth century and writes that the interpretation of the Virgins veil is very close to that in a painting belonging to Sint-Salvadors Cathedral in Bruges. Encloses photocopies of extracts from two publications which include illustrations of similar paintings for comparison purposes. Publications are 'Rogier van der Weyden and the Master of Flemalle' by Max J. Friedlander (Leyden: A.W. Sijthoff, 1967) and 'Rogier van der Weyden, Het volledige oeuvre' (Antwerp, 1999) by Dirk de Vos; colour illustrations of the replica of van der Weydens painting held by the Memling Museum and published in 'OKV guide - St John's Hospital, Bruges' written by Lobelle-Caluwe (c. 2002). There is also a reference to another publication in which an illustration of the replica was published. This is a Ludion Guide entitled 'The Memling Museum - St John's Hospital, Bruges' by Irene Smets (c. 2001); colour image of a painting entitled 'Descent from the Cross' from the studio of Pieter Coeke van Aelst (date unspecified).
