Belleek candelabrum, Stags Head

Description

A porcelain candelabrum made in the Belleek factory, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland. The piece consists of the head of a stag supported by three scrolled acanthus leaves. The antlers form three branches and these support three candle holders in the form of sea urchins. The piece rests on a three-cornered flat base. The mark on the base of the piece is a black second period (1891-1926) transfer-printed mark with the legend: Belleek, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland.

File of material relating to a candelabrum. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from unidentified publication which describes and contains image of object (date unspecified); letter (25 April 1995) from Seán Ó'Criodáin? (address withheld), to Mairead Dunlevy, Director, Hunt Museum. Writer sold present object to the Hunts. States that a family named Condon who lived in Ballyshannon, county Donegal, owned it and he bought it from their daughter, Zelda; copy of letter (2 March 1993) from Dunlevy to Richard K. Degenhardt (address withheld), giving dimensions of the candelabrum. States that object was mentioned by Patrick F. Doran in article entitled 'The Hunt Museum' in the 'North Munster Antiquarian Journal' (Volume XX, 1978). He writes there that the candelabrum was commissioned for a county Donegal family and does not seem to have gone into general production; photocopy of extract from publication by Degenhardt entitled, 'Belleek: The Complete Collector's Guide and Illustrated Reference,' second edition (Pennsylvania: Wallace-Homestead Book Company, 1993) comprising image and information describing candelabrum; letter (c. late October 2004) from Trevor R. Roycroft (address withheld), to Fiona Davern, Registrar, Hunt Museum. Writer is a member of the Belleek Collectors Society. Questions if the date on the Museums label describing the candelabrum is correct and inquires as to the makers mark on the object; copy of reply (8 November 2004) answers queries; photocopy of extract from exhibition catalogue (c. 1971) for exhibition entitled 'Ireland art in the 19th century' held at the Crawford Municipal School of Art, Cork. Candelabrum was exhibited here; photocopy of notes (2 May 1995) in the hand of Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, paraphrases the Museums sources of information about the candelabrum.
