Midleton Mace

Description

A silver mace bearing the coat of arms of Midleton, Co. Cork. The cup-form head is surmounted by an open-arched crown with central cross. The shaft has three knops which can be unscrewed between the middle and terminal knops.

File of material relating to a mace bearing the arms of Midleton. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object and photocopy of photograph of object on verso (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from 'The Hunt Museum Essential Guide' (Scala Publishers in association with the Hunt Museum, 2002) edited by Helen Armitage which describes and contains image of object; notes (date unspecified) which describe the mace and contain very similar information to extract from aforementioned publication; notes, and photocopy thereof (11 December 1995), in the hand of Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, which comprise information given by Patrick Doran. State that mace is from the collection of Lord Midleton. Possibly used as mace of Midleton borough council prior to its abolition. Also suggested as mace of Ireland House of Lords as a Lord Midleton was the last Speaker. Annotation in Hollands hand on photocopy of Dorans notes questions if mace dates from the seventeenth century; transcription of lecture (15 December 1998) on the mace by Anthony Harpur, docent, Hunt Museum. Given as a Friends of the Hunt Museum lunchtime lecture. The Lords Midleton were members of the Brodrick family. Refers to two other objects possibly bought by the Hunts from the Brodrick possessions at Peper Harrow, home of the Brodrick family. These are a Limoges enamelled chasse reliquary, registration number HCM 080, and the Admiral Vernon punch ladle, registration number HCL 003; printout from website (19 January 2002) which treats of Peper Harow; extract from catalogue of sale (c. 30 May 1935) containing image and description of the great mace and sword of the city of Galway. This is attached to note (16 August 2005) from Trudy Hunt to Fiona Davern, Registrar, Hunt Museum, which states that she found it with an article by her father, John Hunt, Senior, relating to Ireland silver.
