Annunciation canopy or baldachin

Description

A baldachin (canopy / reredos) in carved wood with painted panels. It shows the Annunciation in the main panel, with Mary on the left and the Angel Gabriel on the right with a dove between. There are angels on two, small, curved panels overhead. The words Ave Maria Gratia Plena are carved in openwork lettering below the main panel.French or German.

Document mentions Craggaunowen Castle, county Clare, and object was probably displayed there; photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); Hunt Museum collection survey form (4 December 1996); letter (20 January 1997) from Mary McGrath, conservator, Rosetown lodge, Newbridge, county Kildare, to Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, outlining proposals for completing conservation work on the object; photocopy of extract from publication by Father Bernard Curran entitled 'A Guide to Saint Mary's Dominican Church, Cork' (Cork, 1983). Comprises descriptions of parts of the church, for instance, reredos and baldachino; photocopy of extract from unidentified publication (date unspecified) which describes and contains images of a baldachino in a church in Ghent.
