Charlemont dinner service, plate

Description

A circular Chinese porcelain plate, white with blue decoration. One of a pair with HCL 059. It displays the Caulfeild arms and the Collar of the Order of St Patrick. It forms part of the dinner service owned by James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont, who was given it by William Burroughs.

Provenance

File of material relating to two porcelain plates which comprise a pair. Includes photocopies of object description sheets which includes sketches of objects (date unspecified); photocopies of photographs of objects (date unspecified); Hunt Museum collection survey forms, one for each object (dates unspecified). Both plates bear the arms of the Earl of Charlemont. Flyer (c. 1999) advertising an upcoming symposium entitled 'Lord Charlemont and his Circle,' to be held at University College Dublin; photocopy of paper by Cynthia O Connor entitled 'Blue and White Services with Ireland Armorials' published in the 'Ireland Arts Review' (volume 4, number 1, spring 1987). Contains image of one of the present objects; notes (date unspecified) entitled 'Charlemont Dinner Service Dishes' and enumerating their origin; photocopy of extract from publication by D.S. Howard and J. Ayers, 'China for the West,' (London, 1978) which describes and contains image of one of the present objects; photocopy of extract from article by Herman Potterton in the 'Ireland Arts Review' (c. 1991-92) which describes sale at auction of a Chinese export dessert plate bearing arms of Earl of Charlemont and which seems very similar to present objects; notes (date unspecified) signed by Anthony Malismion which describes a Chinese export dessert plate; document comprising description and image of platter taken from publication by Elinor Gordon entitled 'Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain' (John Murray, 1978). States that arms are those of the Earl of Charlemont. Also that several services were made for this family but that this is a piece from a singular service.
