Porcelain pietà

Description

A white porcelain pietà made in the Meissen factory near Dresden by Kändler. The piece shows Mary holding her dead son in her arms and across her lap. Part of the arms of Christ and one of His feet are missing. The quality of the modelling in the Pietà suggests that it may be the work of J. J. Kändler, the outstanding Meissen modeller.

File of material relating to a Meissen Pieta group by Johann Gottlieb Kirchner. Includes photocopy of information card with photocopy of image of object (date unspecified); letter in German (30 April 1982) from Doctor J. Naumann, Director, Hetjens-Museum, Deutsches Keramikmuseum, Dusseldorf, to Gertrude Hunt, Drumleck cottage, Baily, county Dublin, stating that his museum would be delighted to have present object and the Bustelli figures (summary translation in English of letter present); note (c. 22 July) from Maureen Conrad-Glige (address withheld) to Fiona Davern, Registrar, Hunt Museum, responding to her query and enclosing information. In the file, it is unclear which documents were sent by this writer but they are probably: photocopy of extract from unidentified publication with image of a Pieta dated to circa 1732 attributed to Kirchner but reworked by Johann Joachim Kandler in March 1733 and photocopy of extract from exhibition catalogue in German issued by the Kunstlerhaus, Vienna (c. 1988) to coincide with 'Ecclesia Triomphaus Dresdenis.' Comprises description of another Pieta by Kirchner made in 1732. Translation of the extract from exhibition catalogue is also present; photocopy of extract from publication, possibly 'Porcelain Through the Ages' (USA: Penguin Books, 1969) by George Savage, which treats of Kandlers work; photocopy of letter (28 December 1997) from Henry Sandon (address withheld) to John Hunt, Junior, in relation to the present object. He thinks it is by Kandler.
