Mirror picture

Description

A mirror picture of a saint holding cross and palm and standing on a dragon. There is a spray of flowers on either side of the saint. The saint is most likely St Margaret of Antioch who was believed to have been swallowed by a dragon and emerged unharmed from his stomach. Swiss or Hungarian.

File of material relating to a mirror picture of a saint holding cross in palm. Includes photocopy of image of object which also records basic information about it, namely, medium, origin and period (date unspecified); photocopy of Hunt Museum object comment sheet (date unspecified) which notes remarks made about object by Doctor John Bradley, archaeologist/lecturer in history, Maynooth College. Suggests that the picture might depict either Saint Margaret of Hungary or Saint Catherine. In relation to these two saints, suggests consulting two publications. They are: 'A Calendar of Saints: The Lives of the Principal Saints of the Christian Year' (United Kingdom: Little, Brown and Company, 2000) by James Bentley and 'The Behai[m] Marriage Beaker,' respectively. Also, 'Sotheby's Concise Encyclopaedia of Glass' (1991), general editors, David Battie and Simon Cottle.
