Provenance
File of material relating to a bronze cross. Includes photocopy of object description sheet including sketch of object (date unspecified). Mentions Craggaunowen Castle, county Clare, and object was probably displayed there. Attributed to fifteenth-century Ireland; photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from exhibition catalogue for 'Art Treasures in Thomond' held at Limerick Art Gallery (Limerick: Limerick Leader, 1952) which comprises description of object; letter (29 September 1997) from Colum Hourihane, Director, Index of Christian Art, Princeton University, to Hunt Museum. Writes that he is compiling catalogue of late medieval Ireland processional, altar and pendant metalwork crosses. States that he studied a cross in the Hunt Collection in the past and now requests photograph of it; copy of letter (7 October 1997) from Michael Holland, Registrar, Hunt Museum, to Hourihane, states that object to which he refers could be either present object or that with registration number HCM 062. More likely that object to which Hourihane refers is HCM 062; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (30 December 1997) containing comments made about object by Hourihane. States that it is probably English rather than Ireland and dates it to circa 1460-1500. Also, that this is a processional cross rather than an altar cross; photocopy of extract from unidentified publication (date unspecified) which describes and contains image of object named the Hunloke Cross which is similar to the present object.
