Description

A figure of Christ as the Good Shepherd in ivory. Christ is shown as a child sitting with the legs crossed and the chin resting on a hand and a lamb on the lap. The figure is set above a scene with a reclining figure at the base and three lambs around a fountain. Water is pouring from the mouth of a carved head. Goa.

Includes photocopy of object description sheet including sketch of object (date unspecified); photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); student paper (c. 30 June 2001) by Elaine O Malley for university certificate in the history of art and design entitled 'An Exploration of the religious symbolism of The Good Shepherd Ivory Carving in the Hunt Museum'; photocopies of two extracts from publication in French by Edith Mannoni entitled 'L'amour des ivoires' (Ch. Massin) which contains images and descriptions of ivory figures; paper by Francis Collin entitled 'The Good Shepherd Ivory Carvings of Goa and their Symbolism' published in 'Apollo' (c. 1984); photocopy of extract from issue of 'Apollo' (c. 1999) which comprises images and brief descriptions of objects to be seen at forthcoming fine art and antiques fair. Includes reference to Indo-Portuguese ivory group of the child Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Annotation states it is similar to present object; photocopy of extract from publication issued by the Deutsches Elfenbeinmuseum, Erbach (c. 2000) which includes images and descriptions of similar ivory figures; photocopy of extract from publication by J.C. Cooper entitled 'An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Traditional Symbols' (Thames & Hudson, 1995); transcription of extract from publication edited by Douglas Cooper entitled 'Great Family Collections' (London: Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 1965). Describes an ivory figure of the child Jesus portrayed as the Good Shepherd. States that object is displayed in the private apartments of the Doria Pamphili family, in their palace on the Piazza Collegio Romano, Rome. Poor-quality image of this object is also present.
