Delamain Pottery Plate

Description

An Irish delftware plate with a scalloped edge. The rim is decorated with swags and in the centre is a landscape scene with a church. This is one of a pair with HCL 032. These plates were made in Dublin at the Worlds End Pottery of Delamain & Co., c. 1755-1780.

File of material relating to two Ireland delftware plates, both made at the Delamain factory, Dublin. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketches of plates (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from exhibition catalogue for 'Art Treasures in Thomond' held at Limerick Art Gallery (Limerick: Limerick Leader, 1952) which briefly describes both objects; document (date unspecified) which comprises photocopies of photographs of object. Note states that landscapes on such plates are usually said to be by Peter Shee but should be said to be 'by a follower of Peter Shee'; extract from the fine art section of the 'Weekend Examiner' supplement of the 'Ireland Examiner' newspaper which comprises image of a set of eighteenth-century plates by Henry Delamain which will shortly be offered for auction (date unspecified).
