Delamain Pottery Plate

Description

An Irish delftware plate with a scalloped edge. The rim is decorated with swags and in the centre is a landscape scene of a tower and a house, all painted in manganese. This is one of a pair with HCL 033.
These plates were made in Dublin in the Worlds End Pottery of Delamain and Co., c. 1755-1770.

Provenance

File of material relating to two Ireland delftware plates, both made at the Delamain factory, Dublin. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketches of plates (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from exhibition catalogue for 'Art Treasures in Thomond' held at Limerick Art Gallery (Limerick: Limerick Leader, 1952) which briefly describes both objects; document (date unspecified) which comprises photocopies of photographs of object. Note states that landscapes [on such plates] are usually said to be by Peter Shee but should be said to be 'by a follower of Peter Shee'; extract from the fine art section of the 'Weekend Examiner' supplement of the 'Ireland Examiner' newspaper which comprises image of a set of eighteenth-century plates by Henry Delamain which will shortly be offered for auction (date unspecified).
