Figure sculpture (Sedes Sapentia)

Description

A carved, lime wood, polychrome Virgin and Child. The figure of the Virgin is seated and the infant Jesus would have rested on her lap on her left. However the figure of the Infant was removed at some point and all that remains is a portion of his feet. The Virgin is wearing a colourful gown, buttoned down the front with five buttons and gathered at the waist by a belt. The gown is decorated with simple, stylized flowers and patterned diamonds. These motifs are continued on the chair on which she is sitting. The face is painted white with blue eyes and red cheeks and the top of the head is unfinished. The figure was carved without arms.
