Processional Cross

Description

A processional cross in bronze with quatrefoil decoration on arms and shaft. There are circular terminals on the arms and the upright terminal bears the symbols of three of the Evangelists: Mark, Luke and John. There is an empty frame on the lower upright which would have held the symbol of the fourth Evangelist, Matthew.

File of material relating to a bronze processional cross. Includes photocopy of object description sheet including sketch of object (date unspecified); photocopy of photograph of object (date unspecified); photocopy of extract from Christies catalogue of sale (c. 28 November 1961) for auction at which John Hunt, Senior, bought present object for £130. Includes description and image of the cross; Hunt Museum object comment sheet (30 December 1997) containing comments made about object by Doctor Colum Hourihane. Attributes object to Ireland, circa 1460-80. Also, that object was possibly made for a Dominican foundation. Comments that there are two other crosses by the same maker, one in Multyfarnham and the other in the National Museum of Ireland from a Dominican foundation in Sligo; transcription of label used to describe the cross in foundation building display (c. 1996).
